How to Incorporate More Self Care in 2022 (It’s not selfish!)
If you’re anything like me ( which I think you are ), you’re over worked, burning the candle at both ends and used to surviving instead of thriving. You go through some of your days on autopilot. You take care of everyone else first and then fall into bed, while already thinking about what you need to do tomorrow. On top of that, with all thats been going on in the world….unmotivated is top of mind aslo.
Recently Reese Witherspoon and Ina Garten had a debate in Instagram about self care, showing just how important it is, but how it can look so very different from one person to the next.
Reese’s self care looks like :
Start the day with a big glass of water.
Get 10 mins of outdoor light. @Hubermanlab recommends morning light.
Spend 30–60 mins reading without distraction every day.
In bed by 10 p.m. *No late night TV binges. Try to get 8 hours of rest!”
While in contrast
Ina’s self care looks a bit different :
Drink more large cosmos
Stay up late watching more addictive streaming series
Stay in bed in the morning and play soduku instead of reading a book
Spend more time (safely) with people you love
Here’s the deal, everyone’s self care practice looks different. No one is right, no one is wrong. We are all just doing the best we can. Self care is simply about doing what you can to take care of your mental, emotional and physical well being on any given day.
Sometimes what’s missing daily is doing more of the things that you enjoy most. Doing the things that bring your heart and soul joy. Whether it be working out, spending time with friends, a spa day or watching your favorite TV shows, taking the time for YOU is crucial for your well being and mental health. This is Self Care. It means giving attention to your well being. Self Care is not a one size fits all and there are several different types depending on the area of your life that you’re focuing on.
Did you know that you can incorporate self-care into any and all areas of your life? Here are the different types of self care :
Personal Self Care : Knowing, Honoring and listeng to yourself
Financial Self Care: Paying Bills on Time, Saving and Managing Your Money Responsibly
Spiritual Self Care : Prayer or Meditation and Deep Connection with Oneself and Others
Physical Self Care : Taking care of yourself Physically( eating well, working out, Resting)
Emotional Self Care: Journaling, Stress Management, Giving yourself grace
Social Sefl Care : Maintaining Healthy Social Relationships ( in person and virtual)
Environmental Self Care (Home) : Maintaining a safe, comfortable, peaceful home environment
Other : This is related to finding balance, setting boundaries, and feeling productive and valued in any environment
Self care improves wellness and prevents illness and disease. It is a necessity.
Please remember that self care isn’t selfish. Self care should be a part of your daily life. It doesn’t have to cost a fortune, take a long time or be something extravagant. It’s a time for you to slow down and be still in the moment.
